Prepare for Synod with Me | Speaking from the Floor of Synod

I’m a first-time delegate to this year’s Synod of the Christian Reformed Church, which is a little overwhelming because we haven’t met for three years and the agenda is massive and there are some pretty controversial and weighty topics on that massive agenda. So, to make sure I’m well prepared and ready for the gathering, I’m looking for advice from people who have more experience than I do. And, since I know there are plenty of other first-time delegates who are feeling the same way I am, I decided to record my conversations to help you prepare for Synod with me. Advice from Roger Sparks: 1. Speak only when you have something to add to the conversation-Say something new and different 2. Write down three things—Make a short outline before you speak—helps with confidence—Prepare a little bit, at least 3. Don’t wait to put your name in the queue-Get your name on the list 4. You only get 3 minutes to speak-so focus 5. Advisory Committee recommendations set the tone 6. You can table the majority report, to discuss the minority report 7. Remember you represent Christ & the Church 8. Speak the Truth in Love Clearly 9. You don’t have to speak up on everything 10. Begin your talk with, “Mr. Chairman…” 11. Ask for clarification when needed 12. Synod can be very emotional 13. Stick with the Bible and trust the Holy Spirit 14. Start with the Bible. End with the Bible.
